A sustainable material choice requires assessment from sourcing and production through transport, use, maintenance and end of life. Natural or recycled content alone does not establish the best option. The following materials can be considered for residential and commercial projects, subject to technical verification and local availability.
AF Villa shows a specific interior palette of stone, wood and metal. It is useful for discussing appearance and detailing, but environmental selection also needs product provenance, service-life information and suitable documentation; the visual palette alone does not establish sustainability.
Material options
Cross-laminated timber
CLT consists of bonded timber layers arranged in alternating directions and can form part of an engineered structural system. Assess timber sourcing, adhesives, moisture, fire and structural details.
Timber may store carbon during its use, but whole-life assessment must also address forestry, production, transport and end-of-life treatment. Renewable does not automatically mean a particular carbon outcome.
Hempcrete
Hemp components and suitable binders can form a material for insulation or infill, depending on the product and system. Do not treat it as an automatic structural replacement for reinforced concrete. Review moisture, fire and applicable approvals.
Recycled steel
Recycling returns scrap to production, while properties depend on the steel grade and product. Compare recycled content, production methods and environmental information rather than treating all products as equivalent.
Lower-carbon concrete
Some mixes reduce impacts relative to a defined reference mix by changing constituents or production. Check strength, durability, curing, availability and product-specific comparison data.
Bamboo panels
These may be used for flooring, cladding and specially designed applications. Engineered products require review of adhesives, emissions, durability, sourcing and transport. Do not assume local production in Turkey.
Reclaimed wood
Reuse can retain an existing material and its character. Check contamination, moisture, pests and durability, particularly if structural use is proposed.
Mycelium materials
Products and experiments combine fungal growth with organic material to create panels or elements. Application readiness, fire resistance, moisture behaviour and insulating performance differ by product. Request relevant tests and approvals.
Recycled glass tiles
Tiles can add colour and reflectivity. Check recycled content, production energy, slip resistance, durability and binders.
Recycled plastic composites
Certain products may suit decking, cladding or fencing. Review expansion, fire, sunlight exposure, maintenance and the potential for recycling after use.
Why evaluate these materials?
Reuse and some alternatives may reduce demand for new resources or production impacts. Functionally appropriate materials can support durability and maintenance, but conclusions need evidence rather than names.
Indoor air considerations include emissions, adhesives and finishes. One material does not by itself guarantee a building certification or increased property value.
Applications and comparison
| Material | Potential applications | Verification priorities |
|---|---|---|
| CLT and steel | Engineered structural systems | Calculations, fire and sourcing |
| Hemp and biobased insulation | Infill and insulation by system | Moisture, tests and performance |
| Bamboo and reclaimed wood | Finishes and furniture | Durability, emissions and source |
| Recycled glass | Tiles and surfaces | Slip performance and binders |
| Plastic composites | Specified exterior uses | Fire, expansion and end of life |
| Wood texture can be combined with metal or glass in a refined interior, but selection should follow function and detailing. A universal environmental star rating cannot reliably rank these materials without a common assessment method. | ||
| ## Implementation steps | ||
| Work with a team familiar with the required materials and suppliers. Request samples and technical and environmental information, and check lead times, installation requirements and maintenance. | ||
| Timber sourcing certification such as FSC, Environmental Product Declarations and appropriate product certifications may be useful. Each document has a different purpose: an environmental declaration presents data, while a building certification assesses a broader scope. Check validity and that the document covers the actual product. | ||
| Compare lifecycle cost and impact against alternatives performing the same function. Include climate, transport, waste, repair and reuse. | ||
| ## Design scenarios | ||
| A villa might investigate a timber system, alternative insulation or recycled tiles where suitability is established. An office refurbishment might retain existing elements instead of replacing them. These are options for assessment, not claims about completed projects or certifications held by the studio. | ||
| ## Frequently asked questions | ||
| ### What makes a material more sustainable? | ||
| Documented lifecycle performance together with fitness for purpose, responsible sourcing, durability and appropriate emissions. | ||
| ### Does it cost more? | ||
| Prices vary. Compare purchase, installation, maintenance, service life and availability. | ||
| ### How can claims be verified? | ||
| Request technical and environmental data, tests and relevant certification, and review their scope and date. | ||
| ### Can these materials suit luxury homes? | ||
| Yes, where the required quality, detailing and maintenance can be achieved. | ||
| ### Are incentives available in Turkey? | ||
| Verify current programmes and eligibility with relevant authorities rather than relying on a general promise or assumed certification. |
